Exam Style Question

Mojo is a music magazine owned by the publisher Bauer. It talks about the rock genre and classic rock, it is aimed at middle aged men that are into to modern and classic with high disposable income as it is quite an expensive magazine.

The masthead is its first way of attracting the audience. It is bold, in capital letters and has a sans serif font which promotes masculinity. This attracts the audience as it is a male dominant audience, and as it promotes masculinity males will pick up the magazine. Also, big bold capital letters are usually associated with the rock genre. This means that people that only read the masthead into rock are more likely to pick it up.

The colour scheme of the cover helps a lot to attract

Homework - 11/12/17

Magazine Covers:

  • On the cover, the Trey is represented as a typical macho male. He is strong and looks like a leader. He is also in a bathroom and is in a shower. The cover is saying how the man is 'the hardest in RnB' and the image being a typical macho male and Trey looking strong and a leader makes it seem like if you're a RnB artist you'll be strong like him. This makes the magazine sell as men into RnB would want to be like Trey and want to know how to be.

Magazine Ownership and Regulation

Monday 13th November

LO:
- Research ownership, regulation and institutions involved in music magazines

Publishers:

  • IPC Media - Uncut and NME
  • Bauer Media - Mojo, The Box, Downtown Country, Four Music and Q
  • Condé Nast - Pitchfork
  • Immediate Media - Radiotimes
  • Hearst
  • BBC - BBC Music Magazine and Top Of The Pops
Funding and Profit
  • The two main ways that publishers make profit off of magazines, sales and advertising. Sales are either single sell copies, like one copy of their magazine bought in the shop. This doesn't make them much money so they make most of their money from subscriptions through sales as they don't have to pay to go their magazines in the shop. The best way they make money is through advertisements, either getting their magazine advertised in shops or being payed to hold advertisements in their own magazine. Publishers  that own multiple magazines can advertise their own magazines in other magazines they publish.
Ownership
  • The majority of magazines are published by 9 companies but their titles make up nearly 75% of the market, this mean they have a massive influence over audiences and their companies will only get bigger as they control most of the market.
Media Regulation and Law
  • IPSO are the independent regulator for the newspaper and magazine industry in the UK following the PCC scandal, it stands for Independent Press Standards Organisation.
  • IPSO make sure newspapers and magazines follow Editors' code and investigate into complaints made about newspapers and magazines by the public.
  • IMPRESS is an independent press regulator in the UK, the first to be recognised by the press regulation panel.
  • It also makes sure that magazines follow the editors' code and investigate into complaints about the magazines made by the public.
  • Editors Code:

The Future of Magazines
  • The biggest change of magazines in the past 20 years is digitalisation. Digitalisation of magazines allows readers to view magazines wherever they like and when they like with ease. No more do they need to go to the shop to buy magazines all they have to do is pull out their phone. The only reason the industry is still alive is due to money and customers wanting the real thing in their hands.

Magazine Cover Terminology, Layout and Analysis

Monday 2nd October

LO:
- To analyse music magazine covers using appropriate terminology.

- Look at the magazine covers below and answer the following questions, in full, about both covers.

1) The masthead is the name of the magazines, the big title usually found at the top. The masthead of  a magazine usually links to its genre so for example the title mojo links to rock and billboard links to  billboard music, for example pop music.

2) Both the magazines have the masthead located at the top. Both have the main image of a famous singer located in the middle and top with the main headline, their names, located near them to capture the interest of people. The subheading is directly located underneath under the main headline. Both magazines have cover lines located to the side and around the magazine that contain more information about the magazine. They both have a dateline, on the mojo magazine it is located on the barcode and on the billboard magazine it is located under the masthead. On the Mojo magazine cover,  all the cover lines and main cover lines are based all around magazine cover in an unorganised way. This is because the magazine is a rock magazine with target audience of more of a male gender and it relates to more of a loud, crazy and insane type of magazine. However, on the billboard magazine cover the over lines and main cover lines are placed in a calm, settled and organised way as the magazine attracts more of a female audience and presents more of a calm chart hit music genre.

3) Both magazine include a dateline and both include cover lines with information on what is inside the magazine. Mojo includes a barcode however billboard doesn't.

4) There is a main headline on both of the magazines containing the names of the singers on the main image.

5) The cover lines that have been used contain little information in the magazine as they want people to read all about the subject inside the magazine. Both magazines contain about five cover lines with bold fonts to attract the reader. Mojo uses shorter cover lines however to fit to a more impatient and crazy rock genre with a male audience however Billboard uses longer cover lines to fit a more female audience that like to read information about the charts and big stories in the music industry at that current moment in time.

6) Both magazine use bold fonts with colour that stands out from the background of the magazine to attract the reader into buying the magazine. They both use serif fonts however Mojo uses more bold capitals to attract more of a big male audience and it also presents more of a crazy and mad rock genre. However Billboard uses settled and calm fonts with no capitals apart form the start of words on the main cover line to attract more of a female audience. They uses serif fonts that are capitals on the cover lines however the cover lines are small so it still presents more of a calm atmosphere on the cover. The calm font also relate to the genre of calm chart hit music which the magazine is about.

7) On the Mojo magazine cover there is an edited picture of a crowd in the background. Also they have a blue background and fonts are different throughout the cover lines. However on the Billboard magazine cover it contains no images apart from the main image and there is only a simple pink background. All the fonts are the same throughout.

8) On the Mojo magazine cover they use dark colours like blue and black that relate to rock and the fonts are brighter colours to make them stand out. On the Billboard magazine cover they use colour like pink and brighter colour that relate to the pop feminine target audience. Again Billboard uses opposite colour to the background to make the text stand out so darker colour like black.

9) Both magazine contain cover lines that contain little text and information on the subject to make the reader interested in the subject and read the magazine.

10) Both magazines have a main image to get across the main subject in the issue of the magazine, so for example in the mojo magazine they use a picture of Dave Grohl to get across the subject of Dave Grohl. On Billboard they only use on image which is the main image however on Mojo they contain two other images for the same reason.

11) Only Mojo contain freebies which is a CD, as it relates to the subject of David Gilmour.

12) Both magazines contain a menu strip which contains all the main subjects and information on what is inside of the magazine. However, Billboard contains a longer menu strip with more information to give out more information on the charts attracting more of a male audience. Mojo contains a shorter menu strip with little information which attracts a more impatient male audience that just want to read the magazine. It also presents rock the genre as rock music usually contain shirt and snappy lyrics with loud and heavy music.

13) Mojo contains the genre of rock and grunge and Billboard contains the genre of mainstream pop and popular songs and artists, like Katy Perry. Mojo covers rock due to a more male audience and rock fits a more stronger male audience and Billboard covers more popular chart music to fit a calmer more settled audience.

14) Mojo targets more of a middle aged male audience that can afford every new issue. It contains darker colours on the cover and the genre of the magazine relates to a more male audience. Billboard magazine targets more of a younger female audience as the more soft and brighter colours relate to the gender. Also the genre of mainstream pop attracts more of a female audience.

15) Mojo magazine relates to its audience by using cover lines that fit its audience, a crazy and unorganised layout to fit a more crazy and unorganised rock genre and big and bold and crazy fonts to attract a big male audience. The cover lines are quick, short and snappy which will attract a male audience that just wants to go through and read the magazine and not have to read whats on the cover. Billboard uses more of a calm and organised layout that attracts a female audience that wants to read all the information and is patient enough to read the cover. They use a calm mixture of serif and sans serif fonts which attract a female audience. The cover lines are longer and use more complex words to allow the reader to know about all the information without having to go in the magazine. This promotes to more of a female audience which the magazine is aimed towards.

16) The masthead, main images and main title are the mastheads main selling points as readers want to read about popular subjects. The main images usually are the biggest factor of a magazines USP due to it containing the main story of the magazine. So on the Billboard cover Katy Perry is the main image and people want to read about her, so people will buy the magazine. Also, the magazine is aimed at more of a female audience the USP will contain a more feminine story. This is a similar concept with the Mojo cover. As it attracts more of a male audience its main image will contain something related to the genre. This is why the main USP in the main image.

A lot of this comes down to when rock genre really took off, in the 1970s where these clothes are popular among a lot of people. Also because it fits the type of low voiced, electric guitar and loud drums and basses. Ideas and themes of songs usually come from love and problems within their lives as many rock stars were associated with the stereotype of being, heavy drinkers, drug users, sex addicts and having terrible love lives. This stereotype caused the themes to usually be problems like this. Plus it usually tends to be male bands within the genre.

Pop Genre

Singers within the pop genre usually wear glamorous and bright clothes, have funky hairstyles, cool sunglasses and designer clothes. A lot of this is to do with the popularity of pop celebrities today, people need to stand out within the industry to make money so clothes like these will make them stand out. Pop music has very different styles of music within the genre, but it usually contains of electric backgrounds, guitars and basses, some autotune and maybe some techno music. The types of music that are popular today. Things that identity pop music usually are medium length songs with a repeated chorus, and a catchy melody and hook. Plus most RnB artists are african american as this is the race the genre originated from. The music typically sounds very smooth, with acoustic guitars, a soft drum beat, and the often trumpet of trombone. This is down to what musical instruments were available at the time. Themes are usually world problems and trying to create happiness with the music. More modern RnB contains artists such as Usher and Beyonce with a more electrical twist on them.

Dance

Analysis Of Moving Images

Monday 22nd May

LO: To analyse a trailer effectively using the key concepts

The Fast and the Furious

https://trailers.apple.com/trailers/universal/thefastandthefurious/

Trailer Analysis

In the trailer of The Fast and Furious we can tell the genre of the film is action. We can tell through the fast paced music they use throughout the trailer, this music also has a heavy beat which you would find in action films. They have really short and fast paced scenes with straight cuts in most of them but in some they use cutting on action. Also the use of guns, cars and dramatic scenes suggests it is action, there is never nothing happening. There are car chases and continuous fights and races which suggests it is action.

There are three shot types that have been used in this trailer. Close ups at the start have been used a lot in this trailer, the effect this has on the audience is that it creates tension for the audience and keeps them watching the trailer all the way through. Towards the end of the trailer, like when the characters flips a car over another., they have used far shots to show all of the action in the scene. This excites the audience more and more as there is a lot of action happening in the scene which keeps the audience watching the trailer.

The editing used in the film creates a lot of tension for the audience and kept them watching the film. For example the use straight cuts at the start of the film and cutting on action creates tensions which excites the audience as they want to see the action. This action will excite the audience and keeps them watching he trailer so they can see it. They use fade in / fade out transitions which also creates tension. Towards the end they use a lot of cutting on action which excites the audience as something is happening all the time. The editing is very fast paced which excites the audience and is never slow except for the start which builds up tension.

The sound is used in the film to create tension for the audience. To start off with there is no music and all of the sound is diegetic except for a drum beat every time the scene changes. The fact there is little sound it builds up tension for the audience. The use of cars reving their engines and the beat every time the scene changes creates tension. As the music builds up towards halfway through the trailer it gets faster and faster, this matches to the pace of the trailer and builds up tension. The use of dietetic sounds like car noises and gun shots excite the audience and allow us to know the genre is action.

The Mise-En-Scene allows us to know about the film. The setting of the film is usually either in a poor neighbourhood or in a city. This suggests that the characters are from a poor background, they also have scruffy clothes and messed up hair which suggests the same thing. The setting and clothes on the character tell us that the film is set in the modern day. The facial expressions show us that the characters are usually angry or determined to do something. The characters body language is very up right which shows us he is determined. The positioning of the characters are usually far away from each other which suggests that they don't like each other.

The Lighting is usually very high-key and the colour is usually bright. This has been used to show us the action within the film and and to show us that something is always going on. If the lighting was always low-key and the colour was always dark it might bore the audience as nothing would be happening, so they use the high-key lighting and light colour to show the audience what is happening and to excite them.

Sound In Film

Monday 15th May

LO: To understand why sound is used in film

All sound used in film is known as the soundtrack.

Diegetic and Non-Diegetic Sounds and music

- Diegetic - Sounds whose source is from the story world of film.
- Non Diegetic - Sounds whose source is from outside the story world of the film.

Task 1

- The digetic sound would be - Footsteps, Breathing, The fire crackling, The wings of the creatures, The key in the lock, The door opening, The sand falling, The monster moving, The grape being picked, The plate being moved.

Dialogue

 - Dialogue Replacement (ADR) is when they record dialogue after filming and add it on later.

 Foley

- Foley is the reproduction of everyday sounds for use in film making.

Task 2

The sounds you would have to make would be, The moving on the chair, The crickets, The sound of the UFO, The man hitting his head, The man's mouth, The buttons in the ship, The sound of the beam, The man falling, The squeaking of the chair, The ship flying, The alien crying

Sound Effects

 - Sound effects are like foley but they are usually made by computers

Task 3

- The sounds needed to be created would be, The floor cracking, The window smashing, The car falling and possibly its alarm, The monster rising, People screaming, The camera falling the ground

Music In Film

- Music used in films is part of the Mise-En-Scene
- It is often used to create a certain atmosphere of mood
- It helps to add tension, atmosphere and a time or a setting
- Silence can also be used to create effect

Sherlock Holmes Fight Scene Analysis

In the opening fight there was Irish Folk Music which was non-diegetic. The reason they used this type of music is to suggest the era the fight scene was set in. Also they amplified the beat whenever a hit or punch occurred which was used to emphasise the action of the punch or hit. The cheering or the crowd was used to create tension for the audience. Also at the end of the opening scene there was a diegetic spit sound, they amplified the sound of this to allow the audience that he got spit on. In the second scene there was a 'thought process' scene where the man thought and pictured what he was going to do. There were non-diegetic sounds in his head which said what he was doing. They added these to allow the audience what he was doing. The volume of the punches and kicks was amplified to make the audience concentrate on them. There was also a ringing non-diegetic sound when the man got hit in the ears, this allows the audience to know what he is hearing. In the third scene there it was similar to the last. However the voices the man said were not there due to this not being a thought process. The volume of the crowd was lowered so you could hear the sound of the punches and kicks.

Mise-En-Scene

Thursday 4th May

LO: To Explore the term 'Mise-En-scene'

May the fourth be with you!

Mise-En-Scene:

A French term meaning what is put into a scene or frame

The five elements of Mise-En-Scene are...
  • Settings and Props
  • Costume, Hair, and Make-Up
  • Facial Expression and Body Language
  • Lighting and Colour
  • Positioning of characters/Objects within the frame

Setting and Props

  • Settings and Locations play an important part in film making and are not just 'backgrounds'.
  • Sets are either built from scratcher a great deal of time is spent to find a setting which already exists.
You would find props like space ship, robots and futuristic weapons in a sci-fi movie. The setting would usually be in space or on an alien planet. In a Romantic Comedy film the setting would be in a house or everyday locations, the props would be like flowers, a bed, cars and everyday objects. The setting for a Horror Film would a haunted house, a forest, a prison or an isolated locations and for props you would find things like weapons and sharp objects.

Costume, Hair and Make-Up

  • Costume, Hair and Make-Up acts as an instant indicator about a characters personality, status and job.
  • It tells us immediately whether the film is set in the present and what society it is set in.
The Costume, Hair and Make-Up of this character suggests that he is very smart and is quite wealthy, he looks wealthy because he is wearing and expensive watch and a suit. Also that he is
organised as he doesn't look untidy at all.

Facial Expressions and Body Language

  • Facial Expressions provide a clear indicator of how someone is feeling.
  • If someone is smiling broadly, we assume they are happy but we may get a different feeling if they are holding a knife accompanied by scary music.
The Facial Expressions and Body Language of this character suggests that he is angry as he is tensed. His Facial Expressions suggest that he slightly jealous as he has a slight smirk and his eyebrows are not raised.

Positioning of Characters and objects within a frame

  • Positioning within a frame can draw our attention to them
  • It can show the people's feelings to each other and can show the relationship between them

Lighting and Colour

  • To highlight characters or objects within the frame
The types of lighting are...
  • Low-Key lighting - Deep distinct shadows
  • High-Key lighting - Light filters are used and natural lighting to the eyes

  • In this scene they have used props like ships and buildings like a castle and houses.
  • They use the big ships and buildings that overcast the town to create tension as it might seem like something bad is going to happen. The low-key lighting and over by the castle also creates tension and adds a spooky effect, along with a dark colour.
  • The type of ships and buildings used suggest the film is set in the 1700's. The setting suggests it  is set in a caribbean/jungle environment.

  • In this scene the positioning of the characters suggest they are friends or on the same side as they are close together and not angry at each other.
  • Their costume is very ripped up and dirty which suggests the characters are from a poor background, they also have pirate hats which suggests they are pirates so they could be pirates that aren't so highly ranked as they are quite poor. Their clothes also suggest that the film is set int the 1700's.
  • The Make-Up used on the characters is very tattered and very un-human which suggests the characters aren't human.

Editing

Monday 24th April

LO: To understand how the editing of different shots can create and change the meaning of a scene and a film

- Editing is selecting, combining and ordering shots to add meaning and continuity

Elements Of Editing
  • Cutting
  • Transitions
  • Pace and length of the shot
  • Rhythm
  • CGI and animation
Cutting
  • Cutting on action (match on action) - Cutting on action is what you cut the clip on, so if you were on a fight scene you could cut it at a punch or you could even do it on something as simple as someone turning around.
  • Cut away - When it shows a shot and it cuts away to something related to that shot and back to the original shot.
  • Cross cutting (Parallel editing) - Where it cuts between two different scenes that are happening at the same time, it is usually used in a scene with a phone call.
  • Straight cut - It is basic cut from one scene to another with no transitions.
  • Jump cut - When the camera doesn't move but something has changed in the scene.
  • Match cut (Graphic match) - Cuts from one scene to another where either the action is the same or the composition is the same.
  • Eye line match - When it cuts between someone looking at something and then to the something its looking at.
  • Shot reverse shot - Is used to show the dialogue or conversation of 2 or more people.
  • Montage - Is usually used to show stuff that happens over a period of time, usually to show people training for something.
Transitions
  • Fade in / Fade out - When a scene dissolves into black or white to show that time has passed
  • Wipe - To show it moves between scenes more to show a definite change of place
How has editing been used to create tension in the hot fuzz battle scene?

In part one when he was in the fields by the old man and women, to start off it was very peaceful which builds up tension until the police officer comes along. This is where a little battle scene comes along and they use a lot of cutting on action. After when he starts preparing for the main battle they use a montage to create tension, instead of just showing him loading a gun they show him loading multiple guns quickly.

DIRT News Report

Monday 23rd February

DIRT

(Shows diagram of the roadworks, in a map style)
Here we have a diagram of the roadworks showing where the roadworks are. The roadworks have mostly affected the centre of Bodmin, and as you can see they have created many diversions which affects the people living next to the diversions. Due to all the traffic on these diversions it does not allow residents to get to their houses easily.

However, many people agree with the idea of creating a shared space area. The benefits that the plan will give is that it will create less traffic in the centre of Bodmin. Even though the roadworks will take a long time, the traffic reductions will be worth the wait. The plan is actually one of 13 schemes in the building a better Bodmin plan. These 13 plans have been put in plan to decrease the traffic however of course the consequences of the wait are not very good, as you can see. The wait though will be worth it.

News Report

19th January 2017

LO: To research and plan an effective news report

Bodmin Roadworks

  • The roadworks started on the 12th of September and will last roughly 14 months.
  • During the roadworks the roads Dennison Road, Church Street and Turf Street will be closed.

  • They are trying to create less traffic in the town centre (Church Square) and at Dennison Road they are making a cycle path. Turf Street is closed since it is the road that leads to Church Square.
  • The scheme is part of the 'Building a Better Bodmin' project which consists of minor highway changes and creating new junctions.
  • During the works we will also see a major upgrade to leat running under several streets.
People we will interview
  • Locals (One for the plan, One against)
  • Owner of businesses affected
  • Council workers

Report Script
(Anchor Introduction)
At the moment major roadworks are happening in the centre of Bodmin. The roadworks have affected many people so far inside and outside of Bodmin. The roadworks are due to last at least a year, now we go to Elijah, Aidan and Connor to learn more about the subject

(Reporter)
(Shows videos and pictures of roadworks with voiceovers)
So at the moment major roadworks are underway in the centre of Bodmin. The roadworks are due to last at least 14 months.
So far the roadworks have lasted 6 months and have already affected many people inside and outside of Bodmin.
The council have put in plans to create a shared space area in the centre of the town. The idea of this shared space area is to prevent traffic in the centre of the town and to allow pedestrians and cars to be together, however many people disagree with the idea.
The roadworks shut down the entire centre of the town, leaving many diversions and the centre of the town in chaos. The roadworks have also reduced the amount of people visiting Bodmin making less customers for shops. This has reduced the amount of money made and the shops have been forced to close.

(Shows videos at other roadworks in the town)
Not only have the roadworks been in the centre of Bodmin, they have also happened in other places in the town. The other places are Higher Bore Street, Launceston Road, St Nicholas Street and Dennison Road.
At higher bore street they are putting in a cycle trail from the camel trail. Many people think the changes that are being made are putting pedestrians in danger, due to the traffic lights being removed and crossing islands.

(Shows diagram of the roadworks, in a map style)
Here we have a diagram of the roadworks showing where the roadworks are. The roadworks have mostly affected the centre of Bodmin, and as you can see they have created many diversions which affects the people living next to the diversions. These 13 plans have been put in plan to decrease the traffic however of course the consequences of the wait are not very good, as you can see. The wait though will be worth it. The news Cormac has also released is that they are ahead of the schedule, meaning that they are planned to finish 2 weeks early.

(Interview)
Now we have an interview with a council worker that has put forward into the plans.

Interview Questions
  • The roadworks have been going on for 6 months, how have they affected you so far?
  • They are turning the town centre into shared space area, what do you think it will do to the community?
  • Not only are they making a shared space area, they are making a cycle trail through town. What is your opinion on that?
  • As you are working for the council, does it change your opinion on the works?
(Interview)
Now we have an interview with a local that has been affected by the roadworks

Interview Questions

  • What are your views on the roadworks?
  • Does it affect you in any way and how?
  • Do you think it will be worth it and why?
  • What do you think of Bodmin becoming more bike friendly?

(Outro)
So the roadworks are due to last 14 months, will it help the town or not? Now we go back to the studio.

School Report Ideas

5th January 2017

School Report Ideas:

  • Bodmin Roadworks - Local
A situation in Bodmin where roadworks are happening in the centre of town. It cuts off the main road in Bodmin, making people take a diversion through smaller roads. This affects the people living next to the roads that are the diversion. It has already caused major traffic jams through out Bodmin. Not only does affect people in Bodmin it also affects people in other towns. For example, Lanivet is a village 3 miles from Bodmin and for traffic trying to get from one side of Bodmin to the other the traffic is directed through Lanivet, causing traffic jams in Lanivet. The roadworks are expected to last 14 months.

  • Local Nature Reserve Problems - Local
People have been wrecking the local nature reserves in Bodmin. There has been drug use and fires made by people also wrecking the nature. It has been a running issue recently with a lot of people destroying the reserve.
